Blue Star Education's Mindfulness Matters SEL Program Shows Significant Improvement in Student Emotional Intelligence

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. A recently conducted research study in partnership with Garretson Elementary, a Title I school in the Corona-Norco School District, has revealed that Blue Star Education’s Mindfulness Matters Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program significantly enhances students’ emotional intelligence and social skills. The six-week study, conducted in the fall of 2024, demonstrated measurable improvements across key SEL components, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Key Findings

The study, which involved 181 students from grades 3–6, measured student growth using pre- and post-assessments. The results showed a nearly 20% overall increase in students answering SEL-related questions correctly, with notable improvements in specific areas:

  • Self-Awareness: 29% increase
  • Self-Management: 12% increase
  • Social Awareness: 11% increase
  • Relationship Skills: 23% increase
  • Responsible Decision-Making: 22% increase

“The positive impact of the Mindfulness Matters program in such a short period underscores the importance of integrating SEL into everyday learning,” said Torrey Maloof, Director of Content Development at Blue Star Education. “This program empowers students with essential life skills that foster emotional well-being, social competence, and academic success.”

Program Overview

Each participating student received a Mindfulness Matters learning pack, which included a leveled-text reader, student journal, activity book, and a parent guide to encourage family engagement. Teachers implemented the program in two 15-minute sessions per week, covering the five core SEL competencies outlined by CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning).

Teacher, Parent, and Student Feedback

The program was well received by students, educators, and families:

  • “I feel like I understand myself better now. I don’t get mad as often,” shared one student.
  • “The parent guide offered insightful ways to have meaningful conversations with my child,” noted a parent.
  • “This was an amazing resource that engaged students and encouraged family involvement,” commented a participating teacher.

The Need for SEL in Schools

The study reaffirms the growing demand for SEL in classrooms, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened student anxiety and stress. Research from the U.S. Department of Education and Mental Health America has consistently shown that SEL programs reduce behavioral issues and emotional distress while enhancing academic performance.
